The importance of servicing

Cars serve an important function in our lives and without them most of us would be stranded and unable to get to where we need to be. It’s vital to take care of your car with regular servicing to prevent breakdowns, major repairs and larger problems down the track.

Regular servicing

Your car requires servicing regularly at either a specified time or amount of kilometres, whichever comes first. The intervals are usually 6, 9 or 12 months apart and will have a corresponding amount of kilometres, typically from 5,000 to 15,000kms. The recommended distance for your car will written in your owner’s manual or you can ask your mechanic if you are not sure.

It is critical to get your car serviced at the recommended intervals as going too long between services can cause premature wear and damage to your car. Having everything checked and your oil changed will help to avoid break downs which are not only a huge inconvenience but are dangerous too.

Serviced engines use less fuel and produce less emissions, improving your fuel economy and reducing your environmental impact. Services also prolong the life of your engine by keeping it correctly lubricated and highlighting any leaks or safety issues.

Another benefit of regular servicing is that it will enhance the resale value of your car. A detailed logbook of regular services is a great selling point when it comes time to sell.

Oil changes

The most important part of your vehicle service is having your oil changed. If your oil is not regularly changed, it will form into a sludge that blocks the flow of oil through the engine’s passages, meaning it can’t be correctly lubricated. This will result in engine failure and costly repairs.

The oil in engines actually needs to be replaced regularly as it loses effectiveness over time. Doing this will help extend its life so you get the most out of your engine.

Servicing also reduces unnecessary wear and tear which means you will get a lot longer out of all parts of your car. All moving parts need to be lubricated which will keep them in the best possible condition.

Brakes, steering, transmission and suspension checks

During a service your brakes, steering, tyres and suspension will all be checked which can warn of potentially major problems. All of these are major safety features so it’s important they are all functional and well-tuned.

Your brakes and tyres are the main things keeping you safe on the road. Missing your regular services means these will have travelled longer than they should have without the recommended checks. Any safety issues or wear and tear on these systems can be very dangerous and affect other parts of the car too so it’s important stay on top of maintenance.

What’s included in a service?
A typical service includes the following:
  • An oil change and/or filter replacement
  • Checking lights, tyres, exhaust, brakes and steering
  • Ensuring your engine is running in its peak condition
  • Checking hydraulic fluid and coolant levels
  • Checking the cooling system
  • Suspension checks
  • Steering alignment
  • Testing battery condition

Stop putting it off!
For many of us our car is one of our biggest investments and they require regular maintenance to ensure the best possible performance. This is why it’s important to keep up servicing as recommended. Regular servicing can mean the difference between needing minor repairs and having an expensive and inconvenient fault later on. Putting off a service can mean compromising your safety and letting small problems develop into larger and more expensive repairs. Getting your car serviced might feel like an unnecessary expense but as you can see here, it’s well worth it and will save you money on future larger repairs.
